Tena Kotou Katoa, Talofa, MauriGreetings to our school families.

DSCN4533 (9)Welcome back to Term 3! It was a little frightening when I was writing key dates for this term, to note that August is here next week! How time flies! The teachers have been busily planning over the holiday break for the term ahead, and as usual there is a lot happening. Between Cross Country, inter school hockey, and public speaking (Poetry Recital for Years 1 – 3, Speeches for Years 4 – 6) there is much preparation to do. Our main school-wide Inquiry focus will be our school production, which we will prepare and rehearse for this term, and present early Term 4 – see below for details.

Parents of students in Kauri 2 will be aware that Miss Jolliffe had shoulder reconstruction surgery over the holidays. The operation was a success, and we wish her all the best in her recovery, which could take up to 6 weeks. We are very lucky to have Mrs Gill Parker, an experienced junior school teacher, who has worked closely with Miss Jolliffe before, stepping in to Kauri 2 until Miss Jolliffe’s return.

In other bionic teacher news, Mrs Neels has returned from her successful knee reconstruction, and is back in Puriri 1 and in her Associate Principal role. She has made wonderful progress in her recovery so far, and we hope this continues.

Nga mihi,

Kathryn Ramel
Principal

Board of Trustees- Introducing our Deputy Chairperson, Jarrod Dove.

Jarrod Dove

I am delighted to be voted on to the board, and am looking forward to contributing not only to the school but the community as a whole. Snells Beach is so lucky to have such a great school, and an even greater team of people keeping it running, and keeping the kids engaged and inspired.

Jarrod’s candidate statement from the recent elections:

I am excited to be putting my name forward for re-election to the Snells Beach Primary School Board of Trustees. I have served on the current board since September 2015. I am fortunate to live in Snells Beach with my wife and three children, two of whom are at Snells Beach Primary School and the third will be in the not too distant future.

In my professional life I own a commercial property and project management business which is now in its 11th year, looking after property on a nationwide basis from Kerikeri to Invercargill.

Should I be re-elected I am looking forward to working with Principal Kathryn Ramel and assisting in governing and steering the school into the future so that our wonderful group of learners get the very best opportunities in their educational life.

Health Update

Chicken pox is continuing to have quite a strong presence in the school, particularly in our junior classes. This is proving challenging to contain, as children are most infectious prior to spots appearing. At school we are reinforcing behaviours such as regular hand washing and sneezing into elbows (not hands) to try to slow the spread. I would be wonderful if you could reinforce this at home. Please be aware that children need to stay home from school until all spots have healed.

A School Production This Year! A message from Mrs Neels:

Don’t all jump for joy at once – it will cause an earthquake. This year we are planning to hold a whole school production at the start of Term 4 2016. The title of the production is “HISTORY ROCKS” and is the story of music through the ages alongside the concepts of bullying, loss, friendship and self-confidence. Each class will have a song to sing, dance and act to. A production also encourages our gifted children to showcase their amazing talents as lead actors, choir members, dancers and musicians. The virtue of hard work and values of tolerance, love and co-operation will also encourage our children to do their best in The Arts.

To make this production as successful as our last one “We need you!” to help with:

  • Props & scenerywe need you
  • Costumes
  • Helping backstage
  • Front of house
  • Fundraising/baking
  • Specialist dance teachers/musicians
  • A videographer & photographer
  • Sound technicians
  • Lighting
  • Microphones

If this sounds like you please contact Mrs Neels at school. Quoting Mr Morley…it’ll be a blast!

Cross Country

All our students have been braving the weather this week, and commenced training for this year’s Cross Country to be held at school on Friday 12 August (end of Week 3). Please make sure your child has suitable clothes/footwear to run in each day. The Cross Country is a great personal challenge for everyone who completes it, either as a competitive runner, or someone who pushes them self to finish. It is also a rare event in the school calendar which offers ALL our top place-getters from Years 1 – 6 the opportunity o compete at the Inter-School Zone Day shortly after. We would welcome all our parents and family members to come and support on the day. Further information to follow.

Green Fingers have been on show at school again.

Plant 3

Plant 2Plant 1Great to see our Year 3 and 4 students working hard with their teachers and Mrs Mackay to pot native seedlings in the hall this week. From here the plants go in to our Trees for Survival unit at school, to grow big and strong before being planted out in the local community. Such a fantastic opportunity for our students to be part of the full process from seed gathering, repotting and doing the hard yards planting.
