Tena Kotou Katoa, Talofa, MauriGreetings to our school families.

DSCN4533 (9)Our newly elected Board of Trustees met for the first time last week, and duly elected Jemma White as their new Chairperson, with Jarrod Dove voted into the Vice Chairperson’s role. Out-going Chair Maarten Kleyn, led his last meeting after over 6 years of service.  I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank Maarten for his huge contribution. We will acknowledge this more formally later in the year.

Tomorrow, Saturday 2 July at 3:20pm, our Kapa Haka Group will be performing at the Opening Ceremony for the new Sandspit Marina. Performers need to meet at school at 2:30pm. The students have worked really hard through lunchtimes to prepare, and we are incredibly proud of the commitment they have made. A huge thank you to Mrs Williamson and Mrs Watkin for the leadership they have shown in this area, and to Michial Wood for sewing the badges on our sashes.

Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook for news, reminders and updates. We have recently uploaded the Camp Tongariro movie and song for your entertainment. Look for the school logo to find our page, and not the generic one.

Board of Trustees- Introducing our new Chairperson, Jemma White.

Each newsletter we will be introducing our one of our Board members, helping you to develop a better understanding of the Board as a whole, and their role within the school.

Jemma White’s Candidate Statement

JemmaI have lived in Snells Beach for 15 years. I have two sons, one in Year 2, and one in year 4, both very different boys and both love the school. I was co-opted onto the Board at the end of 2012 and therefore have experience and a sound understanding of what is needed to be part of the Board.

I am interested in supporting the school going forward. I want to ensure that we continue to have a school with strong living values, where every child can achieve to the best of their abilities. I am excited about the future of the school and feel that it is important to have some continuity on the Board to support our fantastic new principal.

I have a degree in Psychology and currently work in the field of health and rehabilitation. I also have experience with dealing with special needs at school. I have a sound knowledge of the new Health and Safety legislation. I believe I can be an ongoing asset to the school as I am a committed parent and community member. I want Snells Beach Primary School to be a great part of the Snells Beach community.

A message from your BOT Chair

“I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the parents who voted in the recent board elections. We have just had our first meeting and welcomed returning members Jarrod Dove and Shane McGuire, teacher representative Erena Williamson and new members Kim Love and Brett Howlett.

We would like to thank Bridget Farmiloe and outgoing Board Chair Maarten Kleyn for all their hard work for the school.

We are currently looking at everyone’s role on the Board and planning what needs to be done going forward. Over the next few weeks we will have a short introduction from each Board member in the school newsletter and our details will also be on the school web site. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or you can approach any member of the board if there is something you would like to discuss”

Health Update

We are currently experiencing an outbreak of Chicken Pox. This has affected many of our junior classes, in some cases with up to 7 students away at a time. Please keep students home until sores have healed and are no longer weepy. Head lice continue to be an issue in some classes. The most important message with nit treatment is that, to ensure they are completely eradicated, you must comb with a nit comb every 3 days, for 3 weeks. This covers the duration of the life cycle of the head lice. If you do not continue for this time there will be a re-infestation. Please note that “nit shampoos” etc only kill the live lice, and do not effect the eggs, which continue to hatch, so combing is the most effective treatment.

If you require any further information, help or assistance, on any medical matter,  please contact Ella Evans-Guy, our Public Health Nurse on 09 422 2700.

The Bionic Mrs Neels

Mrs Neels had a successful knee replacement last week, and is well on the way to recovery. She will be on leave for the remainder of the term, with Puriri 1’s other teacher, Mrs Young, stepping in to cover the extra days. We would like to thank Mrs Young for making this process as smooth as possible for the Puriri 1 students, and wish Mrs Neels the best of luck for getting back on her feet soon. Puriri 1’s interviews have been moved to next term as a result (see the Diary above).

Manawa 1 Test Their Boat Designs

Man 1 Boats

Man 1 Beach2

Man 1 Beach1

Manawa 1 and Ms McDonald traveled down to Snells Beach recently, to test if their boat designs actually floated. With reasonable success, who knows? Maybe some future America’s Cup, or super yacht designers may have started their future careers right here, in Snells Beach.

“Yesterday Manawa 1 went to the beach. It was long walk and my leg was sore. When we were there we built a sandcastle, Liana and Seila and Anthony and me. It was a little bit big to me. Liana built the tunnel and the bridge and I got the shells. Ms McDonald asked who wants to sail their boat. Everyone put their hands up and Ms Mc Donald chose some people. We kept building the sand castle but we didn’t finish it before we had to walk back to Snells Beach School.”

By Tenisha

“Yesterday we sailed our boats. I spent ages making it and it was a waste . It  hardly floated.  It sunk like five times. Maybe it was the wind. Anyways it went into the trash because it ripped like a person tore it apart.”

By Anthony

“Yesterday Manawa 1 went to the beach. We went to the beach because we were having a boat race. We left after the lunch bell and we started walking along the path. When we were walking we had to cross roads and my leg felt tired. When we were at the beach we build a sandcastle with Liana and Anthony, we were making a great volcano, river castle. Then our teacher called people’s names to sail their boat. She called my name then I went to get my boat. Our teacher had rice in her hands for our boats to carry. We tested our boats for 30 seconds. My boat sank then it floated. Then all of us had a race. Jonathan came first and he got the NZ cup. Then we went back to school.”
