Tena Koutou, Talofa Lava, Malo e Lelei, Namaste, Ni sa bula, Noaia’e mauri, Fakalofa lahi atu, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, An Nyung Ha Sai Yo, Nay Ho, Hej. Greetings to our school families.

DSCN4533 (9)Last week I spent an incredibly miserable day, lying firstly in the back of the bus, and then in my bunk, struck down with a tummy bug for 24 hrs at Camp Tongariro. Through a haze of feeling sorry for myself, I was struck by how empathetic our Year 6’s were towards me. Not a word society usually associates with a bunch of pre teens away with their mates. But as I heard them tip toe past, offering to help in a range of ways, and generally modifying their behaviour for my benefit, I was reminded that we are growing some pretty special kids in this community, who do truly have a sense of “living their values”.

A personal highlight for many of us on camp was actually to see Finn Gibson, who for medical reasons couldn’t join us, waiting by the side of the road complete with signs, to wave and welcome us back. Not an easy feat considering the delays we had with Auckland traffic! Thanks Finn, for ending the camp on such a special note.

It was also special for us all to have Mrs Jill Corkin back as “Camp Mother”, cooking us beautiful food every night, and keeping our bellies full, and spirits high.

Great memories, great people. A winning combination.

Nga mihi,

Kathryn Ramel

Principal

Busy times for our teachers at the moment. They are currently finalizing mid year assessments, working on written reports, and preparing for parent teacher interviews. Please check the bag of your eldest child for your interview booking sheet. We are holding one late night on Tuesday 4 July, and offering an alternative option on Thursday 6 July, until 5:00pm. Please return your interview booking sheets by next Friday.

Year 6 Camp Tongariro

We were incredibly proud of our Year 6’s last week, as they took on the challenge of Camp Tongariro. They conquered the High Ropes in Taupo, Caving in the Okupata Dropshaft and White Water Rafting on the Tongariro River. The weather was stunning for the Taranaki Falls Walk, and for the first time ever, the ski field was actually open at Happy Valley, Whakapapa. We have postponed our camp assembly slightly to allow plenty of time to prepare, but will advertise this with plenty of warning. Huge thank you to Shane McGuire, Richard Neale and Jean Vegar who were our camp parents. Well done to Miss Thomas, and Mr Chapman for keeping the camp running full steam ahead, when Miss Ramel decided to share in her family’s tummy bug.

Trees for Survival Planting

Our Year 3 & 4 students from Puriri 2 braved the winter elements this week to continue the reforestation of native bush on Solway’s Deer Farm. Our students have been a part of the process every step of the way, since the seedlings were very small. We are proud to know our school is making such a significant contribution to the continuing survival of native birds and insects in our area, while also helping to improve the quality of our waterways by minimizing farm run-off. A huge thank you to Mrs Mackay for her leadership in this area.
