It was fantastic to see so many of our families, friends and the wider community here at our school Gala last weekend. Since the first discussions of establishing a school here, a key point has always been to become a focal point, and meeting place for the community, and it certainly felt like that.

The next few weeks are full of fun, recognition and celebration! We have decided to print everyone a paper version of the newsletter to pop on the fridge, and keep track of those dates. Please check your child’s school bag for this.

You will see below, there is some special news about Mrs Neels this week. On a personal note, I would like to thank Cherylene for the wonderful support she has been to me this year, and over our long history of working together. We look forward to having new stories to share, notes to compare and support to offer each other, and I wish her all the very best as she moves into her new position.

Nga mihi,

Kathryn Ramel

Principal

The Great Snells Trail

We were delighted to have such a successful event last Saturday, raising $6,604. It was fantastic to see so many members of the wider community there, supporting our school. The weather supported us in terms of holding off the rain, but unfortunately due to the wind we were unable to put up extra bouncy castles on the field which would have also been profitable. A HUGE thank you to our amazing PTA (and their partners and wider families) who put in many hours of organisation.

ERO – High Performing Schools

We are delighted to welcome the ERO Team (Education Review Office) into our school next week for a special visit. We have been selected to be part of a national study on schools who consistently show significant improvement in achievement through our middle and senior school (evidenced through our National Standards data). This bucks the nation-wide trend that shows a plateauing at these year levels. This is a huge credit to the quality of teaching and learning happening throughout ALL our classrooms – our middle school and senior school teachers run excellent programmes which build on foundation skills set strongly in place in our junior school. It is fantastic to be recognized and potentially used as a case study for this.

Change ahead for Mrs Neels

Mrs Neels has been successful in winning the Deputy Principal’s position at Mangawhai Beach School, starting Term 1, 2017. This means she will finish with us at the end of the term. Cherylene has had a huge part in making our school as successful as it now is. We will remember her for her love of the Performing Arts, her expertise and passion for supporting students with special needs, and of course…..her perfume! This has not been an easy decision for Cherylene, but it is the right choice for her both in terms of career and family. We will miss her, and remain in close contact, as she is a special part of the Snells Beach family. There will be a farewell for Mrs Neels at 2:30pm on the last day of school – all welcome.

Stationery for 2017

In the past the school has offered the service of selling stationery at the start of the year. The school has never made a cent of profit from this, we would love it if the “golden handshakes” from stationery companies existed, but unfortunately they don’t! This has now become nonviable for us, as it is too hard to predict how many people will purchase through the school, and the potential financial losses of unsold stationery are too great. As a result, you will now be issued a stationery list for your child next year, with your child’s report. Please send stationery to school for the first day of the school year. You have the option of purchasing through any supplier of your choice, OR you may order online direct through Office Max, who will deliver to your door. The school DOES receive a 10% bonus of any stationery ordered through Office Max. The link is: https://www.myschool.co.nz/Snellsbeach. Please note that the cost of school packs may initially seem expensive, but that is because all “extras” are initially included – just “untick” what you don’t require.
