There is a real sense of “togetherness” in the school at the moment, which is a reflection of the activities that our students are involved in currently. Cross Country is always a focus for pride and support for others. There has been plenty of positive chatter among children, talking about selling Disaster Plasters to “support our school”. (And a huge thank you to parents for their support in this). Production practices are starting to ramp-up, speeches are being delivered, and teaching and learning programmes are in full swing. Thank you to the many parents and family members who have come into the school over recent weeks to help or support in some way. We appreciate your support, and the real sense of community that is established.

Nga mihi,

Kathryn Ramel

Board of Trustees- Introducing our Staff Representative, Erena Williamson

DSCN4543 (3)I have had the pleasure of teaching at Snells Beach School for nearly three years, although I have lived in this area for over 12.  I have taught in the senior syndicate of the school since I arrived here, and this year I am teaching a wonderful group of Year 5 students in Nikau 1.

I feel very fortunate to learn alongside an amazing group of people, both staff and students, and I also enjoy arriving each day to such a pleasant environment.  The students at our school demonstrate high levels of respect and they work hard at living our school values; another thing that makes coming to work each day a pleasure.

An area of the curriculum I am particularly passionate about is Te Reo me Tikanga Maori, and I appreciate the opportunity I have been given to work with our students in the school kapa haka group.  The time, effort and commitment these students put in to perfecting the art of kapa haka is truly outstanding.

I became part of the Board of Trustees in October last year and have thoroughly enjoyed representing the staff and learning about the role of the Board and governance in general.  Snells Beach School is a place our community can be very proud of, and I aim to contribute positively to our school in the years to come through both my involvement with the Board and my work in the classroom.

Cross Country Season

I know many of you will have seen the pictures on our Facebook page, but once again our School Cross Country was a fantastic event, made even better by beautiful sunny weather after the rain of the week before.  At times like this it is nice to appreciate our school size, where everyone knows everyone’s names, and are able to give that extra support to get people over the line. Our top place-getters at every level progressed to the  Inter School event held this week at the Warkworth Showgrounds. Our team achieved some outstanding results, among fields of up to 60 competitors. Special mention must go to Sammie Le Bas, who won the Year 6 Girls event by about 300m! Good luck to our Year 5 & 6 students selected to represent the Mahurangi Area at the Hibiscus Event, by virtue of their top 5 placing: Sammie Le Bas, Jenna Brangwynne, Taine Mahue, Quinn Morley, Tommo McGuire.

Paid Union Meeting – Monday 12 September 12:45pm onwards

In line with schools all over the country, staff from our school will be attending a Paid Union Meeting (PUM) on Monday 12th September, from 1pm. Our school will remain open for supervision that afternoon, but where possible, we would encourage you to pick your child up at 12:45pm. Your child received a paper notice to put in their bag today. PLEASE COMPLETE AND RETURN TO SCHOOL ONLY IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE REMAINING AT SCHOOL, so we can make arrangements for supervision. For details as to why the meeting has been called, see below from NZEI:

“The Government has announced a proposal to dramatically change the way schools are funded. Principals and Boards of Trustees would have to make trade-offs between teaching staff and other costs schools face.

Teachers are very worried that the global budget would lead to:

  • fewer teachers and larger class sizes
  • less job security for teachers
  • lower quality teaching
  • fewer hours for teacher aides and support staff
  • more complex financial work for Boards of Trustees”

North Harbour Basketball Coaches Are Currently Working in the School

We are lucky to have the Basketball Coaches from North Harbour back in our school on Fridays. Each class from Years 3 – 6 will receive several lessons. Great fun, and a wonderful opportunity for our students to receive some specialist training in PE.

The Great Disaster Plaster Fundraiser – A message from our PTA

Thank you to the students who have already returned their plaster fundraiser money to school. A member of the PTA is available in the staffroom every morning at 9:00am to collect money & issue extra boxes. A reminder that every box you can sell helps. We appreciate your support.

Family Holidays in Term Time

We have a growing number of students taking time off school for family holidays and trips, particularly during this rainy winter season. We appreciate this can be a special time for your family but do need to make you aware that legally we have to mark your children as “unjustified absence” in the attendance register. Most importantly however, teachers WILL NOT provide worksheets etc for your child to take away with them. This is quite a large extra workload on top of a teacher’s already busy day. Instead, we strongly recommend students keep a diary (written/digital/photographic etc) which serves two purposes – a lasting memento for them, and a way of sharing their experience with their class upon return.
