Tēnā Koutou, Talofa Lava, Malo e Lelei, Namaste, Ni sa bula, Noaia’e mauri, Fakalofa lahi atu, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, An Nyung Ha Sai Yo, Nay Ho, Hej, Hallo, Sawat Dee, Cześć, Goeie Dag, សួស្តី, Здравствуйте, Hola, Ola, 안녕하세요, Ayubowan, Vanakkam. Greetings to our school families.

It has been wonderful to catch up with so many friends and whānau lately – at Kylie Ryan’s Tough Stuff evening, and again at Cross Country, planting days, and recent trips. Schools are always balancing the “must do’s,” handed down from Government departments, with the “need to do’s” for our kids – and we do this best when we truly know and understand our community. Face-to-face contact, kanohi ki te kanohi, will always be an important part of this.

Speaking of community voice, please remember to exercise your right to vote in our Board Elections. All information and voting links have been emailed to you. If you are having any issues, please contact the office – our external provider has let us know that things are running smoothly at their end.

Finally, please take a moment to look over the list of Auction Items for the upcoming PTA Quiz Night. There really is something for everyone, and it is humbling to see the range of businesses supporting us. As someone always working to balance the books here at school, I can’t thank our amazing PTA enough – they make a massive difference to the experiences we are able to offer our tamariki here at SBS.

Ngā mihi nui,

Kathryn Ramel

Principal

SBS Whānau Health Survey & Senior School Pubertal Change Education

Thank you to everyone who completed our recent Whānau Health Survey. We had around 70 responses, representing students from across the school, which has provided us with really valuable feedback.

As you may know, the New Zealand Curriculum is currently being revised. English and Mathematics are complete, and revisions in Science, Health, and most other areas are expected in 2026. We will use your survey feedback, together with the updated curriculum, to guide the design and delivery of our Health programmes at SBS.

You can view a summary of the survey responses at the link below. Written comments have not been included to protect privacy where families or students could be identified. However, if you would like to view these, please contact the office and we can provide a copy on request.

This week, whānau of students in Years 5 & 6 will receive details of the Pubertal Change Education lessons that will be taught over the next few weeks. Please keep an eye out for this information. Based on the survey results, we will continue with our current plan, which has remained largely unchanged for many years.

Rodney Health Trust – Helping Students in Schools

We are reaching out to our community to see if we can help generate some financial support for the locally-run Rodney Health Trust (RHT) in terms of an area they are experiencing increased demand for help in.
Many of us know there are increasing neurological challenges our children are facing. Schools are feeling the pressure in this area as governmental funding for psychological assessments is tight and yet the need is growing. Assessments, and the associated services, are around $6,500 per child.
Over the past couple of years, RHT have been working with local schools, including ours, to help run a pilot scheme to help more children and they have had life-changing success as a result. More and more students could benefit greatly from this help – but RHT needs help to gather funds to enable them to assist.
I know it is a tough time for everyone right now but if there is anyone interested to know more about this scheme then please attend the event detailed below, contact any of the people listed on the flyer, or Kathryn Ramel here at SBS.

The Rodney Health Trust is helping schools with this challenging work achieving life changing results.”

Please join us to hear more. You may wish to become part of it.

Tuesday, 26 August at 5.30pm – 6.30pm
Warkworth Hotel, Southgate Room

Complementary drinks and nibbles provided.

If you wish to support this initiative, please feel free to contact either your school Principal, or any one of the following Rodney Health Trust Trustees;

Toukon Ryu Karate

Classes take place every Tuesday night 6.30 – 7.30PM in the school hall.
My name is Paul Hart and I am the Founder and Chief Instructor of Toukon Ryu Karate New Zealand; affiliated to JKF (Gojukai Japanese Karate Federation). I have been involved with Martial Arts for over 35 years. I have studied Goju Ryu Karate for the past 26 years and I have been teaching a variety of students from the age of 5 through to students in their 80s!
I’m very excited to be bringing karate to the local community.
Karate is the ideal sport/activity for kids and adults alike. In today’s world it is vital that we equip ourselves, and especially our children, with self defence skills. Karate helps promotes self-confidence, balance, fitness, co-ordination, discipline, courtesy, health and wellness, responsibility, and will power. Children may start training in Toukon Ryu Karate as young as 5 years of age.
I hope to see all the students again from last year, but also all Beginners are welcome to come along and have a go. Uniforms are called a ” Gi ” pronounced ” Gee ” – parents will need to purchase one which they can do through Paul if they wish.
All other information regarding joining etc will be supplied at the class or feel free to txt Sensei Paul on 021 297 2431
FB toukon ryu karate
I look forward to seeing you
