Tena Koutou, Talofa Lava, Malo e Lelei, Namaste, Ni sa bula, Noaia’e mauri, Fakalofa lahi atu, Kia Orana, Ni Hao, An Nyung Ha Sai Yo, Nay Ho, Hej, Hallo. Greetings to our school families.

mugshotWelcome to our new school year! We have had a busy but exciting holiday break, enrolling many new families, and start 2018 with around 50 more students that we had this time last year. It is wonderful to see our community grow as more people discover this amazing part of the world we we live. Our main focus as a school this year is “Care for There”, in other words, giving of ourselves, or what can we do which has a positive outcome for others. A part of everything we do here is our Values programme – we believe in growing character as well as academic success. We focus on a value for the whole term so we develop a deep understanding of what the value really means, feels like and looks like. This term our value is Co-operation Mahi Ngatahi – I’m sure that this is a value most parents can integrate into some discussions at home :-).

Nga mihi,

Kathryn Ramel

Principal

We believe in trying to reduce paper consumption. This week we have done a full newsletter print, but we try not to. If you did NOT receive this newsletter via email, please email kramel@snellsbeach.school.nz so we can add you to our database for updates etc. We are also happy to add Grandparents and other family members to keep them in the loop.

Who’s new on the crew?

Our roll growth has resulted in funding for extra staff members. We have been delighted to welcome them onto our team, and look forward to you getting to know them better.

Mr Kyle Port – Puriri 2, Year 3 & 4

KyleMr Port is a local boy who has come home to teach. Having taught in a number of schools in the greater Auckland area and overseas, he is excited to join us at Snells Beach School this year. Mr Port has 3 children, 2 of which are right here at Snells Beach School. Sports and the outdoors are his passions, and you will often find him out on the playground or fields playing sports/games with the students.

Mrs Shannon Corsan – Totara 1, Year 6

ShannonMrs Corsan brings with her experience and passion for Digital Learning and Education Outside the Classroom. She is an experienced teacher, having worked throughout the middle and senior school, up to Year 8. We are delighted to welcome her son into our middle school also. Mrs Corsan likes to spend her free time walking her dogs and exploring the area’s scenic reserves.

Mrs Edie Henchie – Manawa 2, Year 2 & 3

EdieMrs Henchie joins us with specific strengths in Reading Recovery, which enhance her literacy programme. She is also an experienced teacher, joining us from Warkworth School. She originally hails from beautiful South Africa, but now enjoys spending time on our beaches and trying to convince her husband to let her own more pets.

Mrs Dianne Morgan – Music Specialist Teacher

DianneMrs Morgan is known to many of our students for taking the after school guitar lessons. She is an experienced classroom teacher, having previously taught in a number of schools in the area, and we are delighted to have her working with each class as a Specialist Music Teacher, joining Mrs Lovegrove, our Specialist Art Teacher.

Mrs Marissa Bale – Front Office

MarissaMany of you will already know Marissa as a member of our parent community, and a tireless supporter of the school via the PTA. Marissa brings a wealth of people and office skills from her background in the travel industry, and has quickly adapted these to suit the needs of our school. Mrs Bale will work two days a week supporting Miss Henry in the Office.

WALKING SCHOOL BUSES 2018

Welcome back walkers, scooterists and cyclists! A special welcome back to Henrik and Alexandra – who will be running the TAMATEA TIGERS bus, and to Claire – who will be running the SEASIDE STORMERS bus..

Both routes will restart in Week 2. (Please see timetable attached as there is a change to the Seaside Stormers’ days/times.)

Unfortunately, there is no start up date for the Algies Allstars route as Sharon has moved to Sandspit. If there are any keen volunteers for this route (or to help with any of the others), please email kthomas@snellsbeach.school.nz

WSB Time Tables T1 2018

Building Maintenance Work

You will have noticed the building work happening around our school currently. Following a wide spread problem with a sub-standard batch of plywood, our school was tested for leaks and dryness over an extended period. The testing has shown that we are “dry as a bone”, which is wonderful (and a relief). The workers are now replacing cladding that was cut into and patched as part of the testing process. This project began prior to Christmas, and we anticipate it completing in March.

The Great 2018 SBS Meet & Greet

WEDNESDAY 14th FEBRUARY from 5:00pm at Snells Beach, next to the main carpark on Snells Beach Road.

This will be an informal time to talk, meet the teacher, and some of the other families in your child’s class. We really encourage our new families to attend and meet some new friends.

We ask parents to complete the “Parent and Caregiver Homework” so we can really get to know your children. If you prefer, the information sheet can be in an envelope for confidentiality.

Bring a family picnic, or just come down for a play.

High tide is 7:45pm; however, the school will NOT be providing supervision for swimmers.

Juicies (ice blocks) will be provided for all SBS children from their classroom teachers. Extra juicies will be on sale for $2 & Sausages for $2.50.

If you are unable to attend the Meet & Greet, please return the form attached to your child’s classroom teacher at school.

Guitar Lessons After School

Dianne Morgan is once again providing guitar lessons here, after school during 2018. This year the lessons will occur on a Thursday afternoon and will commence on Thursday 15th Feb. Lessons will be held in the school library, just down the main stairwell, on the left.

Pricing and times are detailed below. You do not immediately have to purchase your own guitar, as there are 6 available to use at school, however these instruments must remain in the school, for school use.

A clearfile is a great idea for organizing the sheets handed out each week.

  • Thursday 3:15pm Beginners 5 – 8 yrs. 30min lesson costing $5 plus $5 once a term for photocopying.
  • Thursday 3:45pm Beginners 8 – 12 yrs. 45min lesson costing $7.50 a lesson plus $5 once a term for photocopying.
